Henry S. Shurtleff was born in Farmington, New Hampshire, on February 27, 1816. He was one of the earliest settlers of Hampton township, Illinois. He was a farmer, merchant, postmaster, and assessor, and served as Justice of the Peace from 1856 until his death at age 77. Shurtleff was married twice: to Emeline Williamson in 1840 and to Elizabeth Williamson in 1848; each marriage produced four children. This collection consists of a ledge kept by Shurtleff detailing cases he heard in his capacity as Justice of the Peace.
