Administrative/Biographical History
The Norrlanders Society (Foreningen Norrlanningar) was organized on January 25, 1935, in Chicago by three couples as a provincial society for the northern provinces of Sweden: Lappland, Vasterbotten, Norrbotten, Augermanland, Jamtland, Medelpad, Halsingland, Harjedalen, and Gastrikland.
Membership is open to persons born or raised in these provinces, descendants of one or both parents from the northern provinces or married to a member of the Society. However, officers may be elected only from Society members either born or raised in Norrland.
The purpose of the Society is to bring together members for mutual enjoyment and benefit through rewarding programs of both a moral and intellectual character and to further public knowledge about Norrland and Norrlander customs, traditions and beliefs.
